He never really thought it would be published.
I think the significance was simply in its existence. Here we see a brilliant man of the church faced with the knowledge of the existence of various thoughts that existed beyond what was accepted dogma of the church.
This literary piece was a record of all that he saw and heard during his time, all written as contents of an imaginary island.

This is good reading, during his time and up to our own time.

It important because it inspires people to think about what could be, and think beyond what is. What would your Utopia look like? Its a great question to think about.
