The game is one off and now, the cowgirl on fire, will still be on fire after the game and can be extinguished then. The problem is that blazing cowgirls do not know how to prioritize the important things in life and the interest in bringing the conflagration under control will be directly proportionate to the result of the game depending on whether his team wins or loses.
Seriously though sit down beside him but make sure that you sit on the remote control that turns the television off, then appear all innocent as you slowly hide the remote control and say "Oh what a shame there must be a problem with the satellite/cable". It's worked for me.

There are several issues here - one is selective hearing because of preoccupation with other matters, another is selective hearing because of a lack of interest, but the third is a guy who is trying to listen, but has no idea what you are trying to say. I get that a lot - my spouse somehow thinks I can read her mind, and blames me for "not listening" to her... when she's not said anything concrete yet.
Don't be overly verbal (saying something in 10,000 words that only needs 10), don't be vague (don't "beat around the bush" - don't preface what you want to say with background and don't follow it with justification). Say what you want bluntly. THEN, if the guy wants more info, hopefully he won't be so shocked that he forgets to ask.
