The eggs will last for years but once they hatch they have a wild frenzy of eating and mating, lay the next lot of eggs and die, usually within a week. They are creatures of ephemeral lakes and ponds. When the lakes dry up, the eggs wait in the dirt for the next flood. Lake Eyre in central Australia is a dry salt lake. Every few years, enough rain falls in Queensland to get the rivers flowing and the lake fills. The brine shrimp hatch and feed millions of fish and birds. Many birds, particularly pelicans and stilts, take advantage of the flood and form huge breeding colonies.
