15.8 million in 2000
60.6 million in 2004

to calculate the geometric mean of the numbers 15.8 and 60.6.
take the product: 15.8 x 60.6 = 957.48
Because there are only two numbers, take then the square root. So
square root of 957.48 = 30.94
Therefore the geometric mean is 30.94

The previous answer is not correct. The formula for calculating this is (Value at end of period/ value at beginning of period)^1/n -1 where n is the number of years. (The symbol ^ means "to the power of").

So (60.6/15.8)^1/4 - 1 By my calculations, the answer is .399, or approximately 40% average growth per year.

year 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004
number in millions 15.8 27 38.2 49.4 60.6

growth per year 11.2

I put the values into Excel. I took the actual growth over the four years and divided by 4 to get 11.2 million in growth per year. Then I added 11.2 to the 15.8 to get 27 as an estimate for 2001.

In summary, I assumed that the growth occurred in a straight line over the 4 years.
