Surely if you knew how to help yourself, you wouldn't be asking for help in the first place

No, I disagree. Let me put it this way. When someone asks you for help, do you generally say "Shoo, go away and help yourself instead of asking me"

You dont? I thought so. Most of us will try to help.

These are examples of my standard replies to requests for help.
Assignments- Let us both look at them
Cooking - Try putting a bit more....
Moving this weekend- I cant . working
Car- Cant Need it for weekend

It depends what the help is asking, say that your looking for something that you could do yourself. Say information about a website.
Well that is something you can look up for yourself.
Some people ask for help when they just want attention and use the wrong word for it. See more people would respond to the word help then someone just asking for advice.
If you notice, on most post, there is allot of Help me please, questions when sometimes it pertains to a kid not wanting to do homework.
There is a difference between laziness and really needing help.

So if people really did need help, I am sure they would get it. To me it is used not properly on these boards more often then not.

You might be capable of helping yourself, but you're letting yourself get in the way. People are either mean when the tell you to help yourself, or they're trying to get you to become more self-reliant.

I guess, the justification for that is.. Other people can give you so much advices but at the end of the day it is still you who's going to decide for yourself. You are still the one who's going to choose what you want to happen in your life.

people shouldnt tell you to help yourself, but tell you ways they think you can help yourself or seek out the help you need, if they choose to answer your questions
maybe what they are trying to say is the power is within you, but often we need direction and advice to tune into that power

They might have misheard you and thought you were asking for a second helping of dessert... and they politely tell you to help yourself.

They mean get help from someone other than them, since they can't provide the right amount or kind. Although, they mean well and wish for you to get better in the end. =)
