No!, its not so easy to kill it. If you stop feeding it, it just adapts to living on less or it stays dormant until it gets the chance to become ravenous again.

My ego died when it wasn't being fed properly. Then, I put my pieces back together (when the ego wasn't fed, the mind sort of broke...) I changed my mind and now... well, I don't really know what's feeding my ego or where my ego even is now... Wow, I need to go and think about this because it's a VERY good question...

If you relied on others you will be disappointed. Men have more of an ego the women and it seems for some that if the ego is not pumped up by someone they feel less of a person. How sad is the ego that begs to be fed.

Although the Ego gets a well deserved bad rap, we do need it to function here, it is part of our equipment. With that said, we have forgotten we are it's master, not the other way around, & therefore it runs amuck. The voice for the Ego is such a siren song. We have heard it for so long we think it is us, & this is the base of it's power. How can we even begin to fefuse to follow something we honestly believe is us. In my journey to reclaim my true self I have needed much help from those that walk with me. A thing can not see itself, & so it is with me when I think I am the voice of my Ego. Others help to point out were I am deluded as well as act as a mirror for me. We are all so connected it is impossible to even think we could do this alone. I am not sure I have even answered your question, but I hope I have at least not rambled too much. Thanks for the Question.

The EGO is part of every self. Feed it lavishly, or starve it the core and it's still there...ever alive.
So, it's the matter of whether you want to stay afloat or dive below that determines how you deal with your ego. Holding on to your humility while your stars are glowing brightly is one way of keeping it moderately nourished - not over or under fed.
More likely, it's the praising people around us that supply most of the richness of our ego. If that happens, we can counter balance it so it won't beef up into obesity...Because too much ego can wear us down so easily.

No, I do not think that the Ego dies if it is not fed, because if you are proud of what you accomplished in Life, you are feeding your ego, also you do not need anyone to feed it, because you can rely on yourself to do it.

Two points to make?
First, yes, I REALLY am a psychologist, but that doesn't mean I have to buy into every theory however popular it may be, like Freud, (I think he was basically a nitwit & I'm not alone in this field), or reference the concepts of others. Ego--schmeego--. The definitions of ego, egoism, egotism basically refer to preoccupation & concern for oneself, conceit & so on. However, psychological "theories" of the last half century have embellished it with positive self concept, healthy self interest, sense of identity. Ego has become a "thing," an entity unto itself. Balderdash. A rose by any other name...
On the premise that IF you had an ego, how could it die? You are YOU; can any part of you just wither away & die? May I also say, especially because it isn't getting input from the external, which is not YOU?
Oh yes, third point--IF ego existed, (not that this question was about you, but if it was), everyone adores you, admires your beautiful spirit, your creativity--how much more would it need to be fed???
I see this somewhat whimsical creature, EGO, obese, with gaping mouth, waiting to be FED! Like the beaks of baby birds in their nest, waiting for their mums to put food in them. THAT is different, (although amusing), since food in this case is for nourishment of the BODY to survive. I don't for one moment believe that one "relies" on themselves, or others, to be exactly who they are. They simply ARE.
tiffquam, I like your answers, but please don't confuse being appreciated & loved as feeding you "ego." We all want to be acknowledged, loved, & understood, but it's really not the same thing?

In general terms, according to Freud, the ego is controlled/balanced (in "normal" behavior) by both the Superego, or outside social influences, and the Id, the interior, or instinctive drives within each person. So, since the interior is working in conjunction with (and sometimes in opposition to) the exterior, the exterior will always have some type of influence upon the Ego.
Consequently, if the Ego is not fed by the Superego (outside, social forces), the person (according to Freud) develops abnormally, and does not reach the process of "individuation" required to function as an integrated person.

The ego always gets fed in one way or another, because it's very flexible in what it will feed upon.
"Hey, I'm not getting fed. That makes me a very special sort of ego indeed" -- that would be great ego food.

The ego feeds itself.
If you want to change your ego and your conception of it (which is a very good idea), you first need to do some very hard work training your mind into better habits, not just ignore it.

Ego can feed itself so it won't ever die, you could have a whooped pup with an ego of being the most whooped. A reverse ego you might say .
