I was a sub in a hs classroom today. I was showing a video. I need to put the captions on the tv. I wwas at the tv without the remote. The remote was not useful in getting the captions on. Somehow one of the students took the remote and kept stoping the vcr. I thought I knew who had the remote, but was not 100% sure. I tried asking the student who I suspected had it. I also asked students I felt I could trust who had it. No one knew. I was told after class who had the remote. I left a note telling what happened for the teacher. What should I do if this or something similar happens in the furture?

the district I work for: I can not touch the student. I think he had it in his pocket. It was not in or around his desk. I did get it back before the end of class.

Well, I would just cover up the IR receiver on the VCR so the remove cannot do anything. Use a bit of tape and paper. It is located on the front of the VCR. If you have to, cover up the entire front of the VCR. You will have taken away the power that this kid is enjoying. That takes the fun out of it. The kid will get bored. Odds are, you will find the remote left behind in the class or in the trash.
I would inform the teacher as well and let the principal know of this.

You did exactly right. It's not your job to track down the remote or deal with all of this. You tried, and you left a note to the teacher. That teacher spends every day with that class and understands quite a lot about what's going on, and you're note will help them decide what to do Monday, and hopefully prevent this from happening again.

I would have turned off the TV and told the class they were going to be doing a writing assignment instead of watching a movie today until the remote shows itself.
Isn't peer pressure a wonderful thing sometimes!

I think that next time you sub you should lay out the rules straight. If the exact same case happens again you tell them that either they can give you the remote back and put the video on or they can sit quietly in their seats and write rules!

you need to develop a behavior management strategy with all your classes so they know that you arnt messing with them.
punish the whole class if need be until the person owns up to it..
.. you could make everyone sit doing lines rather than watching the video
being a sub is hard though.. your not recognized as a normal teacher by the students... good luck though.
