If the drain has a small cross shaped strainer in it stick the handles of a pair of pliers into it and twist. Try lubricating the threads with WD-40 first.

Is this like a clawfoot tub where you can see and work on the plumbing, or is it set-into the floor like most tubs? If the latter, there is usually a waste-and-overflow plumbing arrangement (yours might or might not fit this description): the drain in the bottom of the tub might be screwed into the drain pipe underneath. If it's 60 years old, it might be so rusted that you can't budge it... If you have access to the plumbing/drain from underneath (i.e., a crawl space or basement), you need to look at what you have and then disassemble it, if you are comfortable with doing that. if not, get a licensed handyman or plumber. Some of those fixtures are easy to deal with, most are a pain in the neck and should be deferred, at least for that stage of the work, to a pro.

If you are replacing the old waste-and-overflow with a new kit, PLEASE get a heavy-gauge brass kit, NOT the flimsy p.o.s. plastic one. The brass will be about $35 to $50. Use a Teflon-based 'pipe dope' on your connections.

Easy, i do this all the time. get to pairs of pliers, one pair turn upside downward so that the handles are shoved in the drain so the the pliers look like their staiding up. with the other pliers grip the first set of pliers and turn to your left.
