Movie stars and musicians make enough money as it is, and they dont use there profits enough to help better the country. I know some do but not enough. I dont think it should be illegal to download free music and watch movies online. Maybe there could be a five year rule, where for five years after a release there could be those laws but after that it just seems stupid...I dont know, its all a loead of bullsh*t if you ask me.

Just to respond to some insinuations...I volunteer and I donate my clothes and other belongings every fall to st vincent de paul, I pay taxes which helps pay for ppl that need welfare and my fiance and I often buy food and water for homeless ppl we see on the streets near our home.
I just saw this thing on the news that was talking about making penalties for piracy stricter and blah blah and I just think there are way more important things....
Its not like I buy pirated movies from ppl selling stolen work, Im just talking about watching, listening online, burning a mix cd of downloaded music...
NO I am not saying I know what they do with there money...I said that above...but I see what a lot of them do and they are not royalty are doing anything so great to deserve to continuously keep earning money....

I dont think its stealing....is what im saying....Im allowed to borrow books and such.
If I really like a band and I know Ill like more than one song than Ill buy the cd as well.
AND I suppose there are different types of piracy, im merely thinking of downloading music from limewire, kazaa etc...
And duh they pay taxes, again I was merely stating that I do do things that help others when I can and my belief is the more have, the more you can give. I have yet to discover any talents that will earn me millions but if I did make that kind $ I would do more to help the community and the less fortunate and as I only hear of certain celebs doing things like that.

I said nothing of "substantial" amounts of anything...
Once its released out into the public...its released to the public and I dont see why they even make certain laws about such things.
And I hate paying taxes too, I was at the atm one day and there was girl in front of me and I saw her withdraw $300 from two seperate EBT cards. She was a methhead or something too, I wanted to smack her and demand my tax money back...but to each there own I suppose.

One of the ethics of the USA is that there is a fair market - people are compensated for their ideas and talents - their work is protected by a set of laws.
We also have a long tradition of piracy: Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin and revolutionized industry in this country. His invention created a new boom in the economy. But his idea was so simple that most people built their own cotton gins and Eli never made much money for his wonderful machine. Years later some states banded together and voted to award Eli with a large sum of money (A bit over $100,000 - which was worth a million back then).
At least some body wanted to make things right for Eli.
Ben Franklin also had many practical inventions but he believed his ideas belonged to the public and never made money on his inventions.

You mean to tell me you know what every singer & actor does with their money? Frankly, I think pirates should do prison time. Stealing is stealing folks!

UPDATE: Great, so you donate and volunteer, but you're still a thief. I can tell by your comments that you have NEVER created something yourself (song, film, etc) or you would care about this a lot. These people, especially musicians, put everything they have into their music just to have a bunch a losers come along and rip them off. So if suddenly you become rich I can come to your house and steal your stuff since you make enough money anyway? You're an idiot.

The RIAA is an oligopoly that exists only because the government makes ridiculous laws to punish people who threaten their control of the industry: independent radio, file sharing, and artists actually being able to own their own work.
No, I don't care about piracy. Heck, I'd probably still be in a band making music today if it wasn't for the industry and the way it treats its artists, its fans, and its customers.
My songs are free on the net - but if you sign a contract for a label to pay you, you're not even allowed to share your own work. And they wonder why sales are down. And they wonder why every new act looks like Britney Spears and sounds like #*&%. And they wonder why they can't find good musicians or anyone to buy the music...

May we presume from your criticism of movie stars and musicians that YOU donate a substantial portion of YOUR profits (i.e., money left over after you have paid rent, food, utilities, and other basic living expenses) to help better the country? Good for you -- not many people are as altruistic as you must be.

I would consider it an honor for someone to want my music bad enough to have to steal it. Piracy isn't that big of a probelm. Think of all the years people purchased entire albums for one good song. The music industry had it coming.

You are wrong on so many levels...
You decide that they earn enough ? [and it is ''their'' profit].
That which they do is entertainment- not brain surgery nor
rocket science. How are their efforts compensated ? By
someone buying them, just like a painting or a Lexus.
If it's the amount of money that they earn that offends you,
YOU earn that much and donate it to Free The Trees or whatever. ONLY then can you point your finger and say
" I helped this much, have you ?"

I 100 percent agree with you. There really are so many better things to be making laws about and spending time on. It's one thing to walk into a store and steal a cd off the shelf but it's another to listen to music online and so forth. But if I really like a band and I know they're just starting out and need my support, I'll buy their cd...but if I want to listen to like one Britney Spears song I'm all for downloading the song....well, that's how I do things at least. I have no money and they have tons...why should I spend my 15 dollars that is very precious to me and means nothing to them...? Yeah.

It's a weak argument used by spoiled people to justify something that's clearly wrong on its face. Go ahead and steal, but at least have the stones to say you do it just because you want to and that you don't care about the morality of it. Saying someone "makes enough money as it is" or that you don't approve of how they spend it doesn't give you any additional rights. It just converts you from an ordinary, garden variety thief to someone who steals and then whines about it.

My feelings are that if you don't think their product is worth paying for don't pay for it, but don't watch it either. To do otherwise is just mooching off the people who are willing to pay for it.
