It's not a novel, but *A People's History of the United States*, by Howard Zinn, did more to change my understanding of American history (and America in the present) than anything else. If you care about where the United States, and indeed the world, is headed, you should pick up a copy.
A warning: it's a very difficult read--I don't mean he uses too many big words, I mean the information is tough to swallow. You'll never look at things the same again. And I'm not the kind of person who would say this about anything else I've read.
