I would like to know why I would need fuel injection service on my car.

I have been repairing cars for about 25 years. For the last 14 years I have ran my own 3 bay shop. In all that time I have only serviced fuel injectors 4 or 5 times. I operate in a smaller community where I know most people in the area. I want to make sure all those people are treated fair and honest. In my opinion it is a waste of money on a properly maintained vehicle that burns good quality fuel. Rarely do fuel injectors cause problems. It is usually something else that causes rough running. Regular tune up items such as spark plugs, ignition wires, fuel and air filters. Dont use aftermarket air filters that use oil as a dust collector on them on a vehicle that has mass air flow sensor. They coat the small components inside with oil and dust sticks to them causing improper fuel mixtures.

Fuel Injection Service

When fuel injection first got popular. a lot of these lube/quick repair shops started offering a fuel injection cleaning service. they would hook up a can of injection cleaner to the rail and shoot it in the system to supposidly clean the injectors. The manufactures found out that this chemical was taking off the protective coating in the fuel rail and causing problems such as rust, stopped up injectior (from the coating) and was shortening the life of the injectors and the fuel rails. I have never heard that this problem was resolved. My advise to you is to NOT have your injectors serviced. Injectors do wear out and the o rings do leak. You will definately know if an injector goes bad. The engine will run rough and your fuel mileage will be off probally the engine light would come on too. Unless your owners manual recomends you have the injector service done then dont bother its probally just someone trying to sell you something you just dont need

Fuel injection service is when they actually pressure-clean your fuel injection system. It only needs to be done every 100,000 miles or so in newer cars (anything less than ten years old). You're better off using a fuel injector cleaner like Valvoline fuel injector cleaner that you dump in your gas tank when it's close to empty and then fill it up with regular unleaded. Use Valvoline once a year.

How did Midas determine that a fuel injection cleaning probably wasn't performed? I can think of no way a person could make this conclusion after the fact. In most cases, there are no parts replaced and the cleaning doesn't leave any telltale clues which would indicate whether it had or hadn't been performed. If your vehicle is running OK, I would guess that the service was performed or, at worst, not needed.

Be wary of who's offering. They may consider "service" as nothing more than screwing on a gauge, checking the pressure and dumping a bottle of injector cleaner in the tank. If your car runs rough, starts hard, the gas mileage has dropped or doesn't want to accellerate, it would be advisable to have it checked out. If it runs fine now, don't bother. My old Dodge van has 260,000 miles and the injection system has never needed "servicing".

Some mechanics think you need injection service if your wallet is too thick and the money can be injected into their wallet. Might have plugs checked first, even if they last much much longer than in the old days.
