EDINBURG, Texas (AP) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called a plan to build fencing along parts of the Mexico border a "terrible idea" that overlooks local communities.
Pelosi made the comments during her trip to the Rio Grande Valley for the annual Hispanic Engineering, Science & Technology Week conference at the University of Texas-Pan American.
"I have been against the fence, I thought it's a bad idea even when it was just a matter of discussion," said Pelosi, D-Calif. "These are communities where you have a border going through them, they are not communities where you have a fence splitting them
Pelosi also touted legislation known as the DREAM Act that would make it easier for some illegal immigrants to receive higher education benefits. She spoke at a conference that drew more than 5,000 students for activities designed to inspire careers in science and technology

A Qunnipiac University poll taken November 13-19, 2006 of 1600 registed voters found that:
71% agree that in addition to a 700-mile border fence, extra measures should taken to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the country.
63% agree with fining businesses for employing illegal immigrants.

People like to decry Bush for doing nothing about the border with Mexico but the truth is, BOTH parties are heavily courting the Hispanic vote. I think the Democrats believe they have another potential class of people to get sucked into and dependent upon the Government. I don't believe that will work for at least another generation. This current group of Mexicans do not trust government. They sure as hell don't trust the Mexican Gov and ours can deport them. Besides, they seem willing to work for the most part. Can't send welfare checks home to mia madre' in Mexico.
The politicians (Dem or Rep) are not going to do anything about this problem. Pelosi is big about standing up and saying "the will of the American people!" when citing a favorable election or poll. In this matter, however, she seems to have developed selective deafness.

Not a chance - she doesn't care what we think! Over 70% of Americans against amnesty and she wants the back-door approach to amnesty (AKA Dream Act).
She's an insult to California and a big pile of stinking horse poo poo! (can you tell I don't like her?)
EDIT: Bill, they have alredy state that a "virtual fence" DOESN'T WORK - stop saying that it does!
Brian, the fence DOES work. Before they had a fence at San Diego, crossings were high. Now that a fence it there, the illegal aliens have moved east because THE FENCE STOPS THEM!

I can't see how ANYONE who is opposed to securing the borders can claim to be for keeping the United States secure. Nancy Pelosi, every single democratic presidential hopeful AND president Bush included.
