Yes it is necessary. As for bias it seems to go back and forth. The 1973 Roe v wade decision is an example of such left leaning bias that solid credible science was ignored and the protections of the Constitution were perverted to a degree that they could decide in favor of the plaintiff.........

It is necessary under the Constitution and our system of checks and balances in place to protect the people from government. Unduly biased? Yes. Because the other branches of government are not doing their job and the Supreme Court, which should not be legislating, is. We need the Supreme Court but we need it to do its job and it's not doing it.

Of course the Supreme Court is necessary. The process of justices being elected and appointed, however, can prove to be a very biased process.

It IS necessary, but anymore, these days, the USA is crooked and anything to do with the government is undermined. It is really a shame that other countries have to look at us through narrowed eyes, instead of the admired eyes that once beheld our great "WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES....."
We are still a mighty nation and its NOT too late, but we are headed for a downfall if we DONT wake up!!!!

It's Constitutionally required. And remains a mix due to deaths and retirements. It's still anyone's game.
To the person who said how upset O'Connor was by her replacement, I find this laughable. She chose her time of retirement. Also, O'Connor often came down on the side of Conservatives.

Of course it's necessary!! It is the least political branch of government, and serves the purpose of interpreting our laws fairly. And no it is pretty evenly balanced between Moderates, Liberals, and Conservatives.

Of course it is necessary. Biased ? Yes. But the theory is that it gets balanced out eventually. Bush's appointments will be the scab on this nations sense of justice and fairness for years to come. For shame, Mr. Bush.

Yes and no.
The court is absolutely necessary to maintain the checks and balances of power in the government and I don't think it is biased.

Sandra Day O'Conner was reportedly VERY upset to hear that Alito had replaced her. She knew how right wing he was, and could forsee that the court was going to be a 5/4 far right court for a long time now.
