Has anyone ever said that to you or a friend? I hear this often, but I never know how to respond. I know it maybe a racist comment, but I also wonder if the person(people) who said this to me were trying to show they weren't racist. What do you think?

oh i absolutely hate to hear that. i have a coworker who has said that to me, and i was clueless, what do you say, how do you respond to that. she went further on to say, " i mean you speak proper English and you seem very intelligent." at that, i knew i had to say something because its not fair for her to assume that just because a person is black that they can not speak proper English. so i suggest that if you feel offended by this, that you discuss it because if you don't that person could continue to take potshots at you because they think it doesn't bother you.

You can look at it two ways; it could be said as compliment that is heard as an insensitive remark. That would be from someone that is completely ignorant of what they are saying, usually someone that has small time experience with the human race. Or, it could be a remark that has a splash of hidden insult. Also, from the mouth of someone that is ignorant.

Either way, if I were you I would immediately respond with what does that mean exactly. Racist or not, ignorance or stupidity, don't let the remark go unchallenged no matter who says it. By challenging you are showing that you are not satisfied with not knowing and making it clear for the next person who would suffer that remark from the same person.

in their own backwards way they are trying to give you a compliment! i do not think every comment a white person makes should be regarded as racist maybe you are being too sensitive! you could laugh it off by saying and you are pretty fly for a white guy! or whatever.you know its kind of like that old saying much ado about nothing! don't make mountains out of mole hills!good luck.

They are just showing their ignorance. Most people that don't know a lot of black folks get their images from the media. Most folks think black males act look and act like 50 cent, and so are genuinely surpised when they meet someone who is doesn't.

It's really the opposite side of the coin when some black folks tell others, "you sound white."

Yes. I'm Black but not from the US and the people who say it to me think it's some sort of compliment. I don't let it slide. I give them the speech about how disrespectful it is particularly to African Americans.
