You...or anyone for that matter, is here because you are. If you believe in some Master Plan, then there's you answer. If you don't believe in an afterlife, then the only thing you can do is to make an impact on the world in a positive way. You live on as long as the last person who remembers you does. So if you want to live forever, do something so good and so positive that you will be remembered forever. You are you because if you weren't who else would you be? You look the way you do because of genetics. you act the way you act and think the way you think because of your life experiences and the teachings of your parents. Therefore anyone being who they are is a result of those two factors. I have a rather hard time with the whole "I am who I am because some higher power made me this way" thing, due largely to the complexity. In order to plan to make you, to create a specific "you" a Diety would need to have begun that creation process at the beginning of time so that a specific set of genes and chromosomes would come together at the right moment in time in order for outside environmental factors to shape your personality to be exactly who you are at this moment. That by itself would be a momumental task. Then do that for every single living being on this planet, in excess of six billion people!

Too many questions…
We are here to find enlighten and the way back to our original state of beingness which is to free the eternal spirit from the bondage of matter and the obsessions related to matter.
We choose the family in which we are born based on a purpose we set forth prior to our birth and the family we choose serves this purpose at best possible way.
When we die we enter the 4D planes of existence and are able to recall everything as part of the after life process is the recapitulation of our life.
The reason we don’t remember anything has to do with the spirit entering the 3D world that is more condense and in lower vibration frequencies therefore certain attributes of the spirit entity do not come thru the planetary grids.
There is life after death but not in the form we perceive it while being within a body. As spiritual entities we are at higher vibration frequency beyond time and space as viewed from the 3D worlds.

Even if there is an afterlife, why do we have an afterlife? Is there a purpose to an afterlife? Why isn't this life enough? Because we're not enjoying this one? Sometimes I think we're really concerned with these questions because we feel we're not allowed to enjoy this life. We're told our life belongs to something or someone else and not to us. It's all about duty and purpose and what mom wants or God wants or your country wants or what your boss wants. Your supposed to be self sacrificing and help the homeless and starving people.
But if you take the attitude that you're here for just one thing, to make you happy and enjoy your life, your life belongs to you and you don't owe anybody nothin', these questions aren't so important anymore. You can be satisfied with saying, "I don't know."

I agree with Doug .We're here to "learn ",certain lessons, and to be all that we can be this lifetime,so we don't have to come back in the next lifetime, and have to learn them all over again. We do remember ,our past live times, until we're about 5 to 7 years old. Most parents that don't know this, or are afraid of re-incarnation, don't want their children to talk about it. So ask a child,[what did you used to do ,or your name, last life time.] You have to be careful with this ,as it freaks out some people. Not the children,as they know this. We choose to be born, and to what parents,so we can learn or work on specific areas,in which we need.We are also here to help others on their path to enlightenment. There's only one God no matter what name you give "him- her". we are all on the same path . Our mission is to learn and love everything. You don't have to like it,but you ,[we],are all soul,[part of God,Every thing, even the plants stones, animals, are soul,so we love and enjoy all.

"nothingness" cant exist because nothing is also something. it has a name and an uncertain location. it is also and idea, therefore "nothing" cannot exist. in other words, we must exist. read about multiverses, and chaos theory.
