I would suggest Finance. It's more stable and more respected. Also, HRM is subject to corporate trends a lot more - in house, outsource, etc.

Maybe think of it this way - look at the CVs of a number of CEOs: how many have come the finance route? Loads, right? And now how many have stepped through from HR...?

Finance pays better -- but requires greater quantitative skills.

HRM doesn't pay well and requires nothing special.

Finance...It's very engaging. Plus the upside is a HELL of a lot bigger.
