if i'm going to use it again sometime in the next few hours, i leave it on, but push the 'sleep' button. when i'm done for the day, i almost always turn it off. occasionally, i leave it on overnight to watch my screensaver, which is over 1,000 pictures on shuffle! i'm addicted to my screensaver almost as much as my computer! : )

cheers,
Shauna!

We have to computers in our apartment, and we leave both of them on, but turn off the monitors when we are done with them ... EXCEPT when there is a 'thunderstorm' approaching. We have good 'surge protectors' on both, but we still want to be SURE the computers don't get compromised by 'electricity surges' so we turn them off when a thunderstorm approaches.
We do this because it takes 'extra power' to turn a computer off and then on again. We don't even 'hard boot' (turn it completely off and then back on) if a 'soft boot' (just 'shut it down', but leave the CPU on) will do.

Off.
My computer uses about 150W when it's idle, and it's only for computer alone, not counting monitor/speakers! It's not only saves $10 a month (about 30% of my power bill) but also helps the environment.

Kris L: computers do use extra power for booting up - about 20W extra for 5 minutes. It's much better than 150W wasted for hours.

Other thoughts: there are a few of low quality power supplies (it's a computer part) that can fry after full shut down/ starting again. I had a bad batch in Dells at work - they worked fine, but they were likely not to boot again after full shut down. We replaced like 6 out of 10 of them in less than 1.5 year.

usually put it to Hibernate - so its off - and doesnt use electricity; and the MACHINE gets some rest :) -- thats my philosophy

but i have friends who leave it on 24/7 - 365 and some dont even restart.. but again ti depends on the use that you do !!

if its heavy .. lots of applications - then its good to turn it off once in a while .. and how long do you expect yoru computer to last :-p

theres nothing wrong with leaving it on, except it wastes energy - and each person has to do their part in helping out the environment as much as they can!!

At work they tell us to turn them off at the end of the day b/c it saves on electricity. But at home I leave it on all the time...takes too long to boot it up if I am in a hurry plus I have power surge that protects in cause of a storm. It doesn't make a noticeable amount of difference in the electric bill.

well it doesnt matter.I sometimes leave it on, sometimes hibernate it sometimes shut it down. Just depends on the mood and what the computer is going to be doing all night. I usually like to listen to music or watch a movie while sleeping so i leave the movie and laptop on. If i dont have any work at all i shut it down.

I leave it on, if you're worried about that just put it to sleep thats the best thing to do, it basically pauses your computer using very very low energy and once you move your mouse it resumes. Click Start>Turn OFF>StandBy.

I turn mine off, lets it rest and cool, saves wear on fan and other components. Our son leaves his own 24-7 and has had no problems, but turning off saves on electricity cost.
Hope this helps

Yes, we must turn it off when done. This is to save on electricity and preserve the PC.
