What does it matter? I am not a smoker but why does it matter if people smoke in their car or not, it is their car. I don't see smoking as a very big hazard on the road...I do however see eating and talking on the phone a big hazard.

A ban like that is set by the company. The police have nothing to do with it, because it's completely a civil issue. Smoke all you want in a company car, you will never get a ticket for it. But if it smells like an ashtray when you turn it in, they can make you pay to get the smell out, or just fire you. *added* Sorry, I didn't know this question was about the UK. I was assuming it was about some US company that banned smoking in their cars.

As a smoker, I was very cross to wake up this morning and hear that smoking in my car - which I do frequently - is now banned. No notice, no warning.
My car is not a company car, I rarely have passengers (and if I do, I don't smoke) and I don't dispose of my cigarettes out of my window. I have been smoking longer than I have been driving, and I can easily find and light a cigarette without taking my eyes off the road - I find it more distracting trying to change the radio station. And in 15 years of smoking whilst driving, I have never once dropped a cigarette in my lap.
After a bit of research, however, I discovered that smoking is not banned, as such - it is simply against advice. If you are driving dangerously, committing a driving offence or involved in an accident whilst smoking, then you are going to face a more serious penalty. However, smoking in your car is considered inadvisable rather than illegal and a contributary factor if you do something wrong.
So, I shall still be happily lighting up whilst driving - it's about the only place I can smoke without pissing someone off nowadays.

Well I am very anti-smoking - I caned my eldest when he was caught smoking at school and warned the others that they would have the same if they tried it because I saw a favourite uncle die of lung cancer.
However I am also totally against the emerging Big Brother Society and so long as there are not children in the car (which could be dealt with under different legislation like neglect - in *extreme* cases as with babies left locked in cars on hot days) then people should have the choice. There should be seperate smoking/non-smoking pubs too and so on.

I'm F*cked off!!
I don't smoke in my own home because of my son being in the house, I can't smoke at work, or in a pub and now they want to stop me smoking in my car?!!
They can naff off!
It'll be more distracting for someone driving on a long journey and not being allowed to smoke! We'll get all agitated.
I'm sick to death of being told what to do, it's my life and how I live it is up to me!
I have private health care so I'm not a burden on the NHS before someone says that!
I Don't smoke in front of my son or in peoples houses/cars who are non smokers, but i reserve the right to smoke in my own god dam car!

I don't see anything wrong with banning smoking in taxis or delivery vehicles, but not personal cars where there is only the driver, but no kids or non-smoking passengers.

I think the Govt. should STOP taking Tabbaco Tax's and then banning people from using what they pay for!!!
Ah, nope ... the Govt.'s more addicted to the $$$ from tabbaco than the smokers. See the 400 Billion settlement money paid by tabbaco comp's is being used by states to build casino's and roads ... ah, they individual states promised to use the money for campaigns to help smoker's quit ... that's laughable .. they only want it to pay for what they want and then say sin tax ... you deserve it slim balls ... we'll laugh while we spend your $$$ on things and then ban you from 'em.

i think it's the law gone mad again as per usual! i don't tend to smoke much in the car unless it's a long journey, why can't they leave us smokers alone and focus on something else for once, they've already kicked us out of pubs and work places etc... give us a break!!
sorry rant over! lol
