Pandering for votes.
Same reason they wont do anything about immigration.
They want to fool minorities into voting for them.
Hopefully the minorities will do some research and see democrats have hated minorities since the creation of this country.
Just ask KKK Sen Byrd.

Is the juxtaposition of your question and the quotation from Lincoln intended to draw an inference that voting against making English our official language and willfully taking actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are somehow one and the same??? Wow, got a net for that jump??

Even if a national language were ever passed, it would end up being challenged and eventually become a Supreme Court matter. The right way to go about it, is to amend the Constitution. That way it would require states' approval, not just the congress.

Well, I think not voting for a law doesn't warrant arrest, exile, or hanging, but these congressmen lack a sense of...balls. :)Yes, they didn't want to anger their Spanish speaking constituents, so they wimped out. I am a Democrat, and I am embarrassed.

Because in doing that, everything will have to be done in English. Spanish speaking people will have to take their driving test in English rather than in their native language.
Voting ballots can only be in English.
This change would alienate a huge part of our population.

First off, Lincoln never said that. That quote was made up by conservatives.
Next, that bill was a little too restrictive. For example, it would require that all hospital things were in English. I think it is best for everyone if some medical information in Emergency rooms are geared so as many people as possible understand what is going on. If I went to a hospital in Germany, I would appreciate a form written in English that asked me for all my allergies. that way I wouldn't die.

There are some reasonable arguments against having a legally-binding official language. For instance, if you have one such language, only contracts written in that language are legally binding. Thus, it would be easy for the unscrupulous to defraud those who are less than proficient with English by providing them a 'copy' of a contract in thier own langauge with terms different from the english version, which would then be the only version that could be considered in court.
That's just one possible example.

Because it's silly and devisive.
What's next? Having to prove you are Christian to vote? It's like rep's are trying to make the US a white, english speaking, christian only nation.
Just change the christian to muslim and you have the taliban.

because i move to make english the official language could be seen as discrimination against those that dont speak it. and since the democrats want to allow anything (gay marriage, abortion, legalizing canabis) they cant hurt anyones feelings ny making one language official.
it not my personal opinion but thats the rational

Because they want all the illegals in their voting base. The more people they have dependent on government the more powerful they feel.
