I just got a Compaq Presario Lap top (the black ones) its a 15.4 inch screen.
Well basically a friend gave it to me and he doesnt know the password to log in.
How do i reset the log in password???

If the system originally came with Vista installed, then it probably has a blank administrator password. Try booting the computer in Safe Mode (as soon as you turn it on begin to repeatedly press the f8 key. Eventually you whould get a menu with the Safe Mode option)
It should prompt you are a log in ID and password just before it loads the Windows desktop. For an ID use "Administrator". Leave the password box plank or empty.
If that allows you to get in, go to the Control Panel and the User icon and reset the password for the account you want to use (or create a new ID).

I could go on there is a variety of methods if you can get physical
access to a windows based pc you can break it. Enjoy! Ah vista Don't know about the last two but give ophcrak a shot alternatively use a live cd grab the SAM use something like cain and abel and brute force or dictionary attack could take a while though :-)

Try to start in safe mode and remove it from there. Also it should give you a hint to what it is. Other than that I would just reformat to factory settings with restore disc.
