I don't know that it would be accurate to say that Americans are more racist than any other nationality but I would say that racism is more pervasive in American culture as a whole and this is predicated on a number of things:
1. Slavery and Jim Crow are, obviously, the biggest contributing factors in black/white relations. This country was built on a foundation of slavery. The economy would not have flourished as quickly as it did without it and had it not, the industrial revolution would not have happened when it did, etc. Jim Crow reinforced, for both black and white communities, that blacks were not as good as whites. This only ended 40 years ago so you can't expect a complete change in mindset overnight.
2. We have much more diversity here than in Europe. When I say that, I don't mean that you don't have many national groups represented in your population, I mean that the numbers are significantly lower. Scandinavia is a great ex. - when there were very, very small numbers of Africans there, racism was virtually non-existent. As the numbers grew, so did the hostility. When you have large groups of different nationalities living together, there's bound to be friction as everyone jostles for position.
3. Euros are just more well versed in history. Just taking a look at the race related questions on this site shows that 99% of them would not need to be asked in the first place if people had an historical context. I don't know why I continue to be shocked by the ignorance but I am.
4. Euros are more willing to accept the fact that there is a problem which allows you to work towards resolving the issues. Americans pretend that the problem is purely one-sided (blacks blame whites, whites blame blacks, blacks blame Latinos, etc.) which precludes any sort of meaningful dialogue or progress.

Indeed some US citizens are quite racist. I have also personally witnessed acts of racism in England, Italy, Spain, Germany and France. France only recently endured a series of race riots. IT is futile to spend any amount of time pondering over which is the more racist.

Personally I like to treat everyone equal. At the end of the day where you come from or what colour your skin is should not matter.
