After my primary hard drive failed on me, I decided to put the slave as the primary. However, when winxp goes to setup for installation for some reason it does not recognize my hard disk. My IDE controller picks up the hard drive just fine. It is a seagate 200gb hard drive and I noticed I had no jumper pin on the back. I tried a western digital one with no results.

dewcoons is right, it's the jumpers. Go to Seagate's website and download the manual to the drive. The jumper settings will be in there.

In order for your PC to boot from that drive it has to be set as "Master". That is normally done by placing a jumper on the correct set of pins. As it is different for each make and model, there is normally either a chart somewhere on the drive which shows the settings, or there are letters (MA, SL, or CS) at the base of the pins to mark them.

If you can not find the settings, put a jumper on the first set of pins and try it. Move to the next, etc. until you find the right setting.

If the HD isn't appropriate formatted XP can't accept em for installation. You have to check type of formatting and number of partitions and its purpose. You can check it with startup diskette for win 98 but also try to install firstly win 98 and after that XP. Don't worry my I'm make my installation in this way and everything works perfect. I got also abit MB and I'm very satisfied with her. Veradisca & Best Regards, Neven.
