Lincoln was shot in the back of the head while attending a performance of the comic play "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theater in Washington DC on a night in April, 1865. His killer was John Wilkes Booth, a well-known actor and Southern sympathizer, who fired a small derringer pistol at Lincoln at point-blank range. The bullet lodged in the president's brain, and was a mortal wound. Lincoln was carried to a nearby house and laid diagonally across a bed (it was too short for him) and died of his injury without recovering consciousness early the next morning.

John Wilkes Booth, an actor who supported the South, entered the side booth where Lincoln was watching the play. He shot him in the back of the head with a 44 cal derringer pistol. Booth escaped across the stage and out the back. (Later killed when surrounded in a barn)
Lincoln was unconcious and taken across the street where doctors tried to treat him...they probed the wound with a wire, probably increasing the damage. He died several hours later.

He was at Ford Theater watching "Our American Cousins" when actor John Wilkes Booth came in behind him and shot him behind the right ear with a small .44 caliber single shot percussion pistol made by Henry Deringer of Philadelphia. The bullet stayed inside his head. It hit the skull on the oposite side of its entrance place. Who could survive such a wound very long? He did live a while. he was placed crosswise on a bed, for he was 6'4' tall.

Gunshot wound to the head from John Wilkes Booth. The doctors might have accidentally killed him during the attempt to treat the wound, but that is guesswork.
