It was a false story started in 2003 when Mars came unusually close to Earth on August 27. The story has been repeated every summer ever since, even though Mars doesn't come close to Earth every summer. For example this year it won't come close until winter. But even in 2003 it just looked like a bright star. It never gets near enough to look as big as the Moon.

I agree with the prof. The hoax will come back.

However, as we get closer to 2012, I predict that it will get integrated with the other hoax of the end of the world:
The world will end in 2012 ("end" of Mayan calendar) because Mars will get too big.

On 27 August 2003 (note the year), Mars was at its closest to us. For people looking at Mars though a 75x telescope, it appeared as large as the Moon does, when the Moon is seen naked eye (i.e., WITHOUT the telescope).

Someone reported this and forgot to explain the telescope part, so that it was repeated that Mars was going to appear as large as the Moon.

It did not, of course.

But the announcement is repeated year after year as a hoax...

It was a hoax. By now almost everyone knows it was a hoax that is spread every year in the summer.

And you missed it... It was spectacular!
No. No. NO!
A thousand times, NO.
As the good Professor Zikzak said, it was a hoax.

It was, my dear old thing, a complete load of old shite that tends to get trotted out every year or so.

Go to www.snopes.com if you want to read more about it.
