When Mum sent me to the shop for a quarter of a stone of potatoes.

When you could buy 4 blackjacks or 4 fruit salads for a penny (and that was before decimalisation!)

When you thought you were rich if Nan gave you a threepenny bit.

When Wagon Wheels were sold seperately and they seemed huge! ( or was it that my hands were smaller?)

When droopy socks were held up with old knicker elastic.

When we played games in the school playground like, Kiss Chase, Skipping, Two ball, French skipping , Jacks, The Farmer's in his den, Marbles, Piggy in the middle etc, etc.

When you got the cane at school for misbehaving.

When school dinners were real food!

When you got a little bottle of milk every day at school and on Fridays it was flavoured milk.

When there was always a friendly "bobby" on the beat.

When we had respect for our parents and all adults.

But most of all I remember having a very happy childhood and having lots of freedom.

when kids played outside all day, not a parent in sight, without mobile phones. For emergencies we had 10p in our back pocket to use a phonebox (do you remember those?) and we would only come home when we got hungry or it got dark.
I remember when we were able to play conkers, climb trees, ride bikes and roller skates without risk assessments and safety equipment.
When nobody had heard of childhood obesity, when it was not frowned upon to take photos of children or give them sweets.
When children had respect for authority, when teachers taught lessons and parents taught manners....

and do you know what? I'm not even that old!

...when kids went outside to play. We hit the streets on our bicycles right after breakfast and played and played all day until Mom yelled for dinner. No TV, no video games, no computers. We built forts, played Red Rover, went swimming in our clothes and had a GREAT time being kids. I feel sorry for most kids today. I don't think they get the same kind of pure, simple memories because they don't get out of the darn house.

I remember the days when being a punk rocker meant something and wasn't a socially acceptable thing. Those were the days! Thanks Mtv for killing that era.
