Sleep levels have not changed, but the amount of sleep changes according to ones age. It will vary amongst each individual and any given circumstance. Strenuous circumstances including illness can precipitate the need for additional sleep.

Babies, children and teens need much more sleep because of development. Teens usually require at least 12 hours or more/day. Many teens need more than 12 hours/day.

Adults require 8-9 hours/day. Older adults (starting at age 50 or older) still require 8-9 hours/day, but will often experience awakening after less than the 8-9 hours of sleep. The older adult will often awaken after 4-5 hours of sleep and require a nap later on.

Your question of whether or not 14 hours was natural is probably yes it is normal. Some people need more sleep.

Wow, 14 hours! You are on par with my bulldog... I keep hearing experts say that 7 hours is the minimum you should be getting, but I tend to feel my best after 8. More than that and I'm groggy. Less than that and I'm wired.
