Play all the word games you want to. No one knows if there is a god or not anymore than an ant knows why he was stepped on. Why would a person who has accidently fallen out of an airplane dismiss the possibility of finding a parachute on the way down? That would be suicide.

In logic, it is not possible to prove a negative. non existence is not demonstrable in any convincing fashion.
therefore, reason dictates that another impulse is at work.
Atheists are not passive in their assertion that GOD does not exist, they are adamant, to the point of name calling and lying in an effort to assert theory as fact. This demonstrates strong emotional attachment to the argument.
This is why I suspect that their impulse is connected, if not controlled by Ego.
Without proof or the ability to prove their position, they are acting on faith, placed in an illogical platform. Their inability to win this argument has injured their self perceptions as superior to those of the other side of the argument.
Since the other side has been subjected to their scorn and ridicule, the idea that they could not easily win the argument has further injured their imagined identity.
To remedy this, they entrench themselves to do battle against any and all positions that are not their own.
Few have the courage to stand in their camp and entertain the possibility, because they know first hand what ridicule awaits them. thus fear of ridicule is one factor. ergo, ego.

Toogether..don't you even have the courage to say " I don't know." or do you believe you have to have an answer for everything?

But if they jump out of the plane counting on a parachute being there... I would say this is more appropriate an analogy for religion.

There is proof that an omnipotent, omniscient, loving God does not exist - the fact that animals don't have free will but can suffer.

But even if there is no proof that something does or does not exist, it still makes much more sense to not believe in that thing. Do you, for example believe that there is a prefectly formed teapot in orbit around the sun between the orbits of Jupiter and Saturn? You cannot prove that it is not there, so believing that it is there is just as acceptable as believing it is not there.

What a person who uses your argument as a justification for believing in God is really saying is that there is no reason to believe in God. But if we have no reason for believing something, you can make no case that we should believe it.
The argument that believing or not believing in something are equally justifiable when there is no proof either way is an absurd argument, and is even more absurd when the belief that you have no reason for believing causes you to change your behavior and how you act towards others. And why should this arguement lead to believing in one God? This argument leads to believing in all possible gods and states of the universe. This is part of what makes it a very poor argument for defending one belief.

Dr weasel: Actually in logic it is possible to prove a negative. I can, for example, prove that there is no entity that exists whose existence necessarily causes my non-existence. And I prove this because I exist. This is logically proving non-existence. What you are confusing logical proof with is scientific proof. Science cannot prove non-existence because it relies on empirical observation and it is not possible to observe all of exsitence. So science cannot tell us that unicorns do not exist, only that no unicorns have yet been observed. If you would like to contact me, I would welcome a good discussion on this issue.

There are only 24 hours a day, and life is too short to waste it with futile pursuits, as Buddha said. Many things are not that important, so it is best to dismiss them. Buddha said speculating about gods was a waste of time. I know there are no gods. I can prove that to a logical person, bu8t believers are not logical. it would be quite silly to imagine you cn find a parachute as you fall, if you have none with you. It is best to try to think of something that will really work. It would be suicidal to waste time on such nonsense as this. previous experience tells me that one is not going to find a parachute in mid-air. Logic tells us that. Learn some!

I'm not sure you're making your case here.

Seriously, have you EVER heard of a guy finding a parachute on the way down?

I'm thinking if you've accidentally fallen out of a plane, you should come to grips with how short life is, and just enjoy the view.

my problem with your statement is that when a person has a strong belief in finding a parachute it usually makes them more likely to fall, or even jump, out of the plane. evangelicals take this a step further, and actually tell us to jump to avoid making god angry.

belief in a magic parachute is suicide

So I guess this means you entertain the notion that there may be unicorns?
