You want pearls that have a high luster, an even color and that are very smooth & symmetrical.

I like Mikimoto pearls myself. My husband went on business trips to Tokyo and bought me a beautiful pair of earrings. The quality is excellent which is the main reason they are so expensive. The other is that Mikimoto is considered to be the best brand for pearl jewelry. The company is highly selective and innovative regarding pearl production. However, I can't justify paying so much for the rest of my jewelry.

Consider buying your pearls through Bluenile.com. I've been a customer for about years & purchased pearl items for myself & as gifts. Blue Nile offers good quality jewelry at highly competitive prices.

Carat is a unit of weight that is used for diamonds.

Miki Moto are the best pearls on the market. Depending on what you are looking for they are not pricey at all. Go to Kay Jewelers - they have the best prices on them. You can get an 18" strand of 6mm pearls with matching studs for $400.
