I've always hankered after the glory and pride that comes with being awarded a medal (or trophy), but I'm too bone-idle and incompetant to achieve this.

Is there an easy way to legitimately earn such a prize?

It actually takes dedication and hard work. Get good at something you enjoy then try to be the best at it.

Though I think you may have the wrong attitude if you're just looking for the end reward. We're only on this earth for a limited amount of time, it's up to us to decide how we use this time, to make the world a better place or just sit back and kill time with pursuits that are relaxing but won't actually achieve much. How many hours do you spend watching stuff on telly that's not really going to better you as a person, or asking stupid meaningless questions on Yahoo answers?

So if you really want to do something, start with something small, so for example study for a course that you could complete within say a year and earn an award or certificate for it, or work in a soup kitchen, or support some local council project. Then you might find you enjoy the sense of achievement and go for something bigger. Who knows, maybe you'll become mayor or prime minister some day?

You may find this answer annoying, so I might as well go the whole hog and annoy you further but listing all the credentials after my name.

Many sports offer trophies and medals, mabe a bowling league or dart league will interest you ?
Regardless , if you want to earn something you'll need to do something. Telling yourself that you are idle and incompetent wont lead you to a path of glory.
No I don't believe there's an easy way to "earn" any prize - it takes determination, strength and persistence to achieve the selected goal. Good luck and I hope you'll become a winner !!

No, you are not. You simply want to win an award without even trying.
If you must..... sigh.....
Get busy doing something you really enjoy doing. What ever it is, get busy. Make something. Raise pigs. Show dogs. Build a boat. Fix up a classic car. Take a picture. Learn to downhill ski at super speeds. WHATEVER --- just get busy.
THEN
Enter it in your local fair or meet and see how you do. If you win a ribbon, congratulations. If you don't, learn from where you went wrong and try again.
A lady in my quilt class won the California Golden Bear Trophy at the California State Fair for a quilt she hand-sewed while watching late-night tv.
A 14-year old kid won a Huge prize for restoring his grandfather's old, beat up tractor to near new condition.
One photograph can win the Pulitzer Prize.
Get busy.

not sure what the appeal of a medal is these days, so many people get them seemingly for just doing their job, its really taken the shine of them, so to speak

You could try being a lollypop man for a few years, and maybe also do a bit of charity work. The biggest hurdle seems to be to get yourself noticed. Loads of people deserve a medal, but never get one.

Could you, after appropriate training, walk
100 miles (or 160 kms) in 4 days?
If so, you may like to consider trying the Nijmegen International March in the Netherlands.

Go up to David Cameron with a gallon of petrol and a lighter.
Inform him that you were seriously thinking of pouring the petrol over him and igniting it, but had second thoughts as you realised sh1t doesn`t burn.
That will guarantee you a medal.
