Since both are in the playoffs and can't play each other in the first round, do they bother with a one-game playoff?

No. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head record during the regular season. The Yankees win the AL East on this tiebreaker, and the Red Sox get the Wild Card. Read "Scenario #1" in the link below. I know it's from 2003, but the rules still apply.

Ohh, thumbs-down trolls. Not even a source-cited correct answer will satisfy them.

The NYC fan is correct about the Red Sox and the Yankees because they are both going to the playoffs. However, if the Mets and the Phillies finish in a tie and the Padres or Rockies have a better won and lost record, than the Mets and Phillies would have a one game playoff to see who wins the division and the loser is out of the playoffs. The same with the Cubs and Brewers.

No they will not have a playoff

If the Red Sox and Yankees finish the regular season tied: The Yankees will be declared the division winners based on their 10-8 advantage over the Red Sox in their season series.

no there wouldn't be a playoff because both the red sox and yankees are in the playoffs and they don't need to play a tiebreaker; the division would go to the yankees because they won the season series against boston. if the cubs and brewers or phillies and mets tie, then there would be a one game playoff because most likely only one team from each of those divisions will make the show. the wild card in the NL most likely will go to a NL west team (padres, diamondbacks, or rockies)

No, the Yankees won the season series (games played against the Red Sox... Yankees won 10/Red Sox won 8). So if they are tied Yankees by default win the AL East crown...

but IMO I don't think the Yankees WANT the AL East as much as the Red Sox.

In case of a tie, Yankees will win the Division because they won the season series. GO YANKEES!!!

Nope, yankees won the season series, however I would rather play cleveland, LAA owns NYY and i'd rather see the red sox and angels tear each other apart in a small series.

No. The winner of the season series would win the AL East and the other team would win the Wild Card.

No actually they won't That only happens if the season series is split. The Yankees own the season series.
