They would automatically win the division because they already clinched in a playoff spot.
If the mets (as much as I hate to say it) actually pull through long enough to tie with the Phillies. They will have to go to a one game playoff match-up because neither of them is promised a spot.
LETS GO YANKEES!

What you heard is true - there will be no playoff game
If the Red Sox and Yankees finish the regular season tied: The Yankees will be declared the division winners based on their 10-8 advantage over the Red Sox in their season series.

Yes, in the scenario you described the Yankees would win the division because they were 10-8 against the Red Sox this year. The head to head record is used to break a tie when one team will win the division and the other team will be the wild card. The one game playoff is used instead of head to head records to break a tie when the loser will be out of the playoffs completely.

In the event that the Red Sox and Yankees* finish the season tied, the Yankees get the East division championship by virtue of winning the season series, 10-8. The Red Sox will get the wildcard berth.
Since there are no other contenders for the wildcard, there is no way that an AL playoff game will be necessary.
The NL, OTOH, is, to be kind, murky.
-----
* Always write "Red Sox and Yankees". Never write "Yankees and Red Sox" -- "Red Sox and Yankees" is the correct form.

The Yankees have won the wildcard and that is how they will go to the playoffs. I think someone said on espn the other night that they have something like 23-14 games to win to make it to the playoffs. But don't quote me I could be wrong.

I think they only do tie-breakers when the outcome is one team going into the playoffs and another team going out.
If they are both making it, I don't know that either team would want to play an extra game just for the title of AL East champion.
I think it would be good for NY to win the division, so they can play the Angels and Cleveland matches up with Boston.

Dude you really don't want the yankees to win the division, then we have to play anaheim, and we don't want cleveland having the best record in the AL either.

you yank fans dont seem to get it, it doesnt matter where you finish, youre going to get swept, if youre lucky youll get the indians and sabathia/carmona/westbrook is way better than anything the yanks can put up, especially since you only have 2 pitchers that have been truly good this year, otherwise youll get the angels, and the yanks have shown a proclivity for getting whooped by the halos
