...naturally, some of the most touching and heart-wretching animal films are the classics, and taking that into account, you just cannot beat the oh-so beloved 'Lassie' movie series (Lassie's actual name, off-screen, was 'Pal'). Look at the IMDB webpage below, for the series' list; I believe a good number of them are available on video...
...if your daughter likes horses, might I suggest "National Velvet" (1944), "International Velvet" (1978), "My Friend Flika" (1943) and "Thunderhead: Son of Flicka" (1945)...
...if I had to pick a personal favorite animal-based film, which I have taken closest to my heart, it would easily be the breath-taking adventure/drama from 1983, "Never Cry Wolf"...
...and I might just lose more than a few personal & self-proclaimed 'frightfilmfan' points with this admittance, but candidly, one of my animal-based guilty pleasure films, also directed by Carrol Ballard, who helmed "Never Cry Wolf", is the touching and humorous real-life drama, about a little girl (Anna Paquin) and some ducklings, called "Fly Away Home" (1996)...

I recomend all the disney and pixar movies (they do loads of animal stories e.g lion king 1 & 2 & 3, Finding nemo, Happy Feet, Bambi 1& 2, Dumbo)
101 Dalmations, Lady and the Tramp 1& 2 all have dogs in it. (I know those are very common, but I thought I should start with the basics first. I dont know if young children still get to see the old Disney movies)
Movies with dogs in it:
Magic Round about
Balto
The Saggy dog (I dont know if she will enjoy it that much)
Movies that contain animals in it:
Brother bear 1&2 are really good.
Fly away home (quite sad at the beginning)
Sorry I hope this helps!!
