The answer depends on whether you are doing regular maths or Boolean logic.
Both are written in the same way, so your expression can be interpreted as either.
In case you didn't get the message from earlier answers, in regular maths the answer is 2,
but in Boolean logic, 1+1=1 !!
In this case the symbol 1 doesn't mean one in mathematical terms, and the + sign doesn't indicate addition.
The figure 1 indicates a true logic state, and the + sign means the logic "OR" condition for two elements.
The expression therefore means:
If either or both of the logic states is true, the outcome is true, else if both of the logic states are false (indicated by 0, which again does not mean mathematical zero), then the outcome is 0 (i.e false)
This gives rise to the truth table:
0+0 = 0
1+0 = 1
0+1 = 1
1+1 = 1
There you have it !!
If you want a simple practical explanation, try this.
You have been out on a bender with your flatmate, and arrive home at 2am under the influence and in a downpour.
If either or both of you have a door key, it doesn't matter who opens the door, the result is that you get in out of the rain. The result is a 1.
If niether of you has a door key, you are going to get wet!! The result is a 0, or in this case a miserable night in the nearest bus shelter.
