It depends on what type of storage units you have, and what kind of pest control you are using as to why it is not working. You first should check around each of your units and determine how the rats are getting in. Any opening larger than a quarter will allow free entry. I would recommend you close any openings dime size or larger that will help with other rodent pests. Secondly, use baits and traps inside your units with a rodenticide of some sort. Usually a ball made with peanut butter, corn meal and rodenticide is attractive to rats. Thirdly make sure all food for rats and harborage is contained in airtight containers and that you have picked up your cardboard, loose anything, clothing etc. anyplace that could harbor rodents. Your storage units should also be dry, as a water source also helps keep rodents around. You should also check for burrow holes around the outside of your units and place the baits down into the holes, (use a long stick to push them in, don't use your hands). Other much more toxic methods for control are available for small air tight areas. You could consult with a professional pest control company for more drastic measures, and make sure when making bait you follow ALL manufacturers instructions. Common predators of rats include some cats, (not all will go after a rat), black snakes and some dogs. But utilizing these require you to house, feed and water the predators so in storage units baits and traps will usually be your best bet. By the way, if you have rats in one, if other units are near by, you most likely have rats there too. Look for holes around the outside of your units, rats will make a burrow underground near walls and housing entry points. If there are dirt floors inside, look there as well.

Peppermint oil - it repels any type of rodent! You don't have to worry about finding smelly bodies or empting out traps - and your storage building will smell nice.

Spray it around the base of the walls and place cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil in various places - IT WILL WORK!

I have tried the 'critter-repellant' as mentioned above - did not work on my mice problem, it smelled like dried animal pee and it almost repelled us! But the mice would walk right through it, LOL.

I find my Pepmt. Oil at GNC (health store) - not the candle section of a store, thats a imitation and it won't work as well as pure oil.

We have rats/mice in our yard, and while we probably cannot get rid of them, I need to deter them from our sheds, bird feeders etc... Here is something I just saw on the internet that you might try. It says it's safe & natural.

Get some crisco/borax/sugar mix together and put on top of cardboard in storage unit... This will kill them... But you will have to find the "bodies"... So, maybe put this mixtutre outside of the storage unit to attract them away !
