A row goes across, a column goes down.
When I get confused I just think of columns in buildings because they go up.

When you think of a column, think of a Greek temple! When you think of a row, think of Pretty maids.

Row is going down
column go side way.
doing spread sheet?
when u want to make lot of boxes.... u need to know how many rows you want and how many columns.
so let say u want a box with six by five
then u would make it 6 columns and five rows.
how u have 6 boxes going horizontal
and 5 boxes going vertical.
