genetically modified foods have the following benefits.

higher yield per acre.
shorter growth time.
longer production time due to cold/heat resistance, some crops normally grown in a particular season can now be growth in any season.
resistance to certain diseases.

of course this isn't the exhaustive list of benefits.

i feel since you have a 20min lecture on gm food, you can touch alittle bit on the negative aspects of gm food.

such as.

there is no evidence that gm food is safe to consume in the long run (though there is no evidence to say the contrary). we have no idea the effects of gm food to the human body in the long run.

gm foods has greatly increased world food production. however hunger is still evident in many parts of the world. gm food is a costly techology and thus may/may not be affordable to poorer countries. even if the country could afford it, with increased production costs, this cost maybe shifted to consumers who may not be able to handle this increase in cost.
gm foods may not ultimately solve world hunger.

with greater production, the exists the problem of greater wastage. this can be seen exceptionally in developed countries. as such, can gm food be really a good thing, afterall it'll will contribute to greater wastage.

prehaps these are some issues you can address.
just some of my personal opinion. hope it helps!

in diff viewpoints:

scientists-GM foods may end world hunger
farmers-Gm crops use less pesticides and hrebicides
doctors-gm foods maybe created to solve health problems for example children whose major diet staple is rice often have a vitamin a deficiency. rice can be genetically engineered to produce vitamin a
environmentalists-genes from gm crops may spread to create superweeds
politicians- it may end world hunger

Increased yields (bushels per acre)
larger products (1lb oranges)
longer possible growing seasons (resistance to cold/heat)
resistance to disease (corn wilt, wheat rust)
resistance to parasites (bowl weavle)
brighter colors (aesthetics)
resistance to decay (longer shelf life without the need for preservatives)

so long as you stay away from hampster-tomatos or squash-humans I think it will be ok.

My opinion is that it's like any other technology. Used wisely, this could be great. Abused, it could be a nightmare.
