When I was a kid back in the late 50's early 60's most families had only one TV. My own children were not allowed to have TVs in their rooms even though most of their friends were. The difference--my kids are in college on academic scholarships. I don't know if it had anything to do with what's on TV or just more time to sleep and do homework.

I did during high school.
It's a huge potential for time-wasting.
You must DECIDE to turn it off when studying. (Don't have it on "just for noise".)
You must DECIDE to turn it off to go to sleep. You might stay up all night to watch junk.
Watch only selected shows of highest quality. Limit your viewing to 1 hour per night. Take a night off for thinking or reading (not school reading).
You're better off with no TV in the room.
