With a population of only 21 Million people Australia must be man for man or women the greatest country. Economicaly, GDP per capita, Olympic Medal count, World Titles, Defence and Foreign Aid per capita! How strong would we be with a population of 200 Million ?

I agree. I remember reading that Australia holds the most Olympic medals per capita than any other country. I think that we are just bred strong and smart in the lucky country!

P.S. The joke that we are all descended from criminals is getting old and lame - wouldn't it be good if people would actually be a bit more creative when paying us out?

DAR76 do you even know history?? Why don't you actually read a book instead of spreading ignorant lies.

Very few Australians today are descended from convicts. Over a quarter of Australia's population are first generation Australians. After WW2 Australia's population was around 4mill so a very large percentage of Australia's population immigrated in the last 60 years.

We did stop being a penal colony after a few decades, just like America. Most colonists were free men.

The convicts were sent from England for crimes like stealing bread. Hard core criminals (that's sarcasism).

But yes, on a per capita basis (GDP) and a living standards, Australia is one of the top3 countries in the world. And considering our size, we have produced an amazing amount of sportsmen, scientists, businessmen, famous people, etc...

Good call, Wayne,

DERRR76... I mean DAR76, You are a cretin. If you knew what you were talking about, you would realise that us Aussies are made up of a very diverse cultural background. This is another point to strengthen Wayne's claim.

Yes, a large proportion of the first white settlers were convicts. Maybe that is what makes us man for man one of the toughest nations in the world. (I can almost hear your sphincter muscle quivering, about to let the contents of your bowel go.)

Great Britain's loss our gain.

funny that.

the australian media only covers issues that australia excels in. so the general population gets a very one sided view about how great the country is.

try checking out how great our health and education system is comparatively with other nations. In your logic, if we're the 'greatest country' shouldn't we have the greatest health and education too?

oh that's right, its far more important for this country to uphold it's image of being great sports people. we'll throw millions of dollars in to that. never mind the health care system is in crisis and kids are leaving school without even rudimentary skills in basics of maths and english.

travel a bit. you'll get a more rounded view of the world.

Yes we have so much to be proud of and isn't it great that our kids and their kids get to grow up in such a fantastic country and go on to make it even greater.

You're still a bunch of descendants from criminals.
