About 5 a year happen because of the tectonics plate! (California will break off the US.)

What magnitude? What time period? If you mean, since California was formed as a land mass, about 2 billion years ago, and if you mean every earthquake bigger than magnitude 0.5 (about the size of 1 human jumping up 1 foot), then there have been billions and billions.

seems like to many (I've been in 4 myself). The state lies on several fault lines. The problem is you cannot predict when one will happen (you know when a snow storm will come in for example).
