Not necessarily, but it can be.
If you think women are hard on men - well they are much harder on each other. We know men aren't going to meet our expectations (by this I mean find the same things to be important, not a measure of male skill or intelligence) - but we do expect women to understand and "get it right".
Your work situation is not going to get any better - I'd quietly start looking around, but don't tell anyone what you are doing until you've secured that next job and are ready to go.

The last place where I worked that had a majority of women...we were all engineers and scientists. None of us engaged in that sort of childish behavior. We worked better as a team than the men did, we didn't have any of the guy-type competition crap going on. We helped each other instead of trying to one-up each other. At that place, it was the men who were the back-stabbers and gossipers.
I suppose it depends on the type of people you're working with. I've run across too many really nasty guys. I'd rather work with women.

Yes, I do think it's true. I worked in an office environment that was mostly women, and I am sure I was the one chosen to be laid off because I wasn't part of the clique. They were all friends with each other, and I was just there to do my job.
I was also a temp once and saw the same thing. They knew I wasn't going to be around for long, so they didn't try to be friends with me. They wouldn't go to lunch with me, they wouldn't speak to me, and they were *very* quick to gossip about me.
You'd think that kind of thing would end after high school, but it doesn't. I hope you find a better job.

It can be. Unfortunately, society kind of teaches women to hate one another. If we are fighting amongst ourselves then we don't expend the energy to fight for any real power as a group. This also leads to a lot of self-loathing. If you are taught to hate other women and you are a woman, it only stands to reason that you will most likely hate yourself as well.
I'm sorry it is like that for you. What do you think might happen if you turned some of these women on to some empowering political groups? Invite them to some kind of protest? Get their minds off of petty nonsense and on to something more global. Start some kind of community service project in the office. It might help.
Good luck. I'm sorry you are having such an unfortunate experience.

Pretty much. I used to work in an office full of ladies, and the one guy who worked there, had his own office in a seperate part of the building, he was also our tech guy though. But yea, women love to gossip, if you tell one of them anything, everyone will know it within an hour. If you love your job you should stick with it. And really, just don't take anything they do too seriously. Or personal. When women get in groups they get catty.

Pretty much, that's what you get with a bunch of women. I used to work with only women a few yrs back.. all they did was gossip, and didn't do any work. Then I went to where I was about the only woman working with about 10 men at an auto parts store. So much better, they don't gossip. It was a much better work environment.

Where I work the kattiness is departmental. service hates retail, retail hates new sales... so i don't find that it's just women talking about women... course... the females are the ones that go into the other departments doing james bond spy techniques so that the other departments have something to talk about.... personally, i just play on YAnswers all day and stay out of it....

Unfortunatly, I have to say yes. Women get really irritated with other women easily. You are just in the line of fire. I feel for you. Hopefully that time of the month doesn't come for all of them at the same time. Good Luck!
