Math Testing Tips?

Well, I recently took my first math test in Geometry and I did not score well on it at all. I feel like I understand the material, but the language in Geometry is so confusing to me at times (i.e. an angle is 30 degrees, twice more than another angle, etc). I have another test coming up and this previous test has really gotten me down. Tests and quizzes count for 65% of our grade so I'm really scared if I screw up on this coming test that I'm on my way to failing Geometry.

Does anyone have any tips on how to conquer Geometry tests/quizzes and math tests in general? I know you shouldn't be nervous, take your time, but I make the little mistakes or I just completely forget it. Please, if anyone has any good suggestions that would be great!

Second, what are some ways to dissect a Geometry problem (i.e. an angle is twice more than another and 20 degrees more, etc.)? I know how to do the algebra, it's just the set-up that screws with me.

Get the book called "Geometry Made Easy". It'll explain everything clearly. Also, always practice, practice, and practice the problems. Within time, you'll feel fed up. That's the mark of your mastery.

An angle is twice its complement. What is the angle?
So let x = the angle
Then 90-x = complement, since complementary angles add to 90 degrees.
So your equation becomes x =2(90-x).

Two angles are supplementary and one is 10 less than three times the other. What are the two angles?
let x = one of the angles
Then 180-x = the other angle (supplements add to 180)
So 180-x = 3x-10. Or you could have said x=3(180-x)-10.
Either way you get the same answer. In one case x is the larger angle and in the other x is the smaller angle.

Just relax, read the question carefully, then decide what x should be, and then make an equation involving x according to the problem statement.

One angle is three times another. There sum is 120 degrees.
So you say to yourself let x = the smaller angle. Then 3x must be the larger angle. So x+3x = 120
If one angle is 10 more than three times another angle, then you say let x = the smaller angle. So the larger angle must be
3x+10.

I think you should have teching material of Geometry that is distributed by school. You should do exercises in book, and independent think and find answers in book as soon as possible. Take easy, others can pass through test, you can do it too!

when you go back and check your ansers just make sure everything adds up and your probably right. i.e every triangle has 180 degrees in it every square has 260.
also make sure it sounds reasonable. if you finding an arc length thats about a quarter of a circle whos perimiter is 3 feet the arc length isnt gonna be over 3 feet right?
basically that was just a long drawn out way of saying take your time and check your answers, because trust me, it really does help.

In the "For Dummies" series of books there is one for geometry, I've found these books extremely helpful... good luck, it'll get easier with practice. Also, let your teacher know the difficulty you're having, he'she should also be committed to helping you... that's their job!
