This take home test is ridiculously hard. I've already got what I THINK are the answers, but I'd like some backup to make sure mine are correct, because I can't find these crazy answers anywhere in my stupid book.

A) England
B) Virginia
C) Brazil
D) Barbados
E) Spain.

2. By 1750, all the southern plantation colognies
A) based their economies on the production of staple crops for export.
B) practiced slavery
C) provided tax support for the church of England
D) had few large cities
E) all of the above.

3. New York and Pennsylvania were similar in that they both
A) were established by joint-stock companies.
B) experienced slow population growth.
C) had ethnically mixed populations

I put E, B, and C, but I'm totally not sure.

1 is clearly B - the first slaves arrived in the North American colonies at Jamestown, Virgina in 1619 just 12 years after the colony was founded in 1607. Spain was not calling the shots in 'North" America.
2 is UNcertainly E - you might be right about B (see below)
3 is probably C
Your teacher wants you to think. Thinking is indeed hard work. History should be more than memorizing. You might challenge your teacher's thinking too (at some risk). I'm not sure he or she wants "all the above" for #2 . My thinking is that they all had slavery and they had few large cities - in fact the only "large" city in the South was Charleston South Carolina. If two letters are correct, the only option that fits is E - "all of the above" - though A and C are debatable in question 2. Not all southern colonial crops for export were "staples" - tobacco for instance - or cotton - or indigo. The tax support for the Church of England is VERY debatable - but you don't have the choice to say that only B and D are truly correct for #2.
This could be tricky for you. The questions could be written better. It's dangerous to point this out to teachers. I teach history and I don't mind when students show me that I'm wrong, but some teachers will be offended.
In answering questions it's usually best to recall what the teacher says in class. They usually state their opinions, and that's what they want back on the tests. Much of history is a matter of opinion.
Good Luck.
On second thought - you might be right about B for #2. Your teacher is focused on slavery. But the South did not have large cities. This one is tough.
On third thought - Jaspers mom may be right about #1 being "A" - - England would have had the major say in the statutes affecting the colonies. I wonder if your teacher covered this in class? These questions ARE difficult - and I am a college history teacher. No wonder you are having trouble.

1. A (as the 13 orginal colonies were British England would make sense to me)

2. E as there are serveral that are the correct answer so all of the above would fit the mold

3.C as I have to say this makes the most sense

Hey there I've heard that we should concentrate on the 20's, Cold War, and Women's Rights for DBQ topics. Right now I have the Princeton Review and it's great I would give that a shot. If you can't get it just browse wherever on the net there are plenty of other tests and they rarely change the format. Good Luck to all, Niki

I would put 2E, because A and B are correct. Yet, i'm not entirely sure, since i don't know about C.
