It's safe. The website owner can "go to the trouble" of telling her or his nameserver that anyone who types "mysite.com" will get the same results they will when you type "www.mysite.com". It's just the website owner's way of doing you a favor and, hopefully, saving you some hassle and typing. I do it on my websites, and lots more webmasters are doing it too (because, in a way, "Who needs www, after all?" - there's an online webmaster magazine article about saving folks some typing, just by that title!)

"www" was mandatory at the beginnings of the web (1990).
Now, although most of domains are registered as www.something, the registrar "domain search" considers that the www is "tacite" and does not need to be typed in! (makes us a bit lazier every day).
When entering www.something, the DNS will search for www.something. If you enter "something", the DNS will search first for "something". If it does not find it, it adds "www." in front... and finds it!
Same for the "http://" that "should" preceed the "www." !
If it is not there, the DNS adds it for you.
Nice! In a few years, we will type "some" and get to "https.//www.somethingsecure.asbz"...

If you look at the url, you are one one of those sites right now. answers.yahoo.com I will not say all websites are safe, but if you trust the site, like yahoo then there is no problem. It is called a sub domain. Think of it like a sub directory of the web site you are at. So if yahoo was a folder on your computer, answers would be a folder inside your yahoo folder.
Hope that helps.

Website domains are usually registered as www.mydomain.com but you can also set the nameserver to recognise mydomain.com as well.
