I don't think so...but there are SO many people out there nowadays just looking for something to complain about, why take the chance? Either just iron your hair real flat, or else wear lots of little flowers in it.
Good luck! I'm sure everything will be "groovy"...

As long as you do more with the hippie thing than just the afro, I don't see what the big deal is. No matter what you do, someone will probably get a bee in their bonnet. If you're expected to dress up, then people need to get over it.
Have fun!

You have the right to wear your hair that way. Black women wear silky straight hair weaves of all colors. If a majority of blacks didn't perm relax their hair, it would grow out like an afro.
Plus a little something for you to reflect on: In Australia there are black people who have naturally silky hair, ranging in colors from Black, red, blonde and Brunnette. Now Could there be a jungle or Island here on earth where there are white people with naturally coarse curly afros? I think so.
Just type "Aborigines" in yahoo image search and you'll see what I'm talkin about:)

I don't really think that's racist at all. Afros were kind of a hippie thing and I would just think she was probably just trying to have fun and be silly.

Not even a little bit. Back in the Sixties and into the Seventies, everybody was wearing afros, of all different nationalities. When it came to hairstyles and fashion, those were definitely the decades of "do your own thang."

No. I have white friends that have naturally curly hair. If they let it get out of control they end up with an afro. I think it is a hair thing and not a black thing. I wouldn't suggest you paint your face black with the afto.. some may not like it.

No. I was a hippie way back when, and anyone who had curly enough hair to support a 'fro might wear one. It was not taken as a mockery of black people, but as solidarity with them. Much like I understand dreads are done today.

No. It was a style at that time. It wouldn't be anymore racist than a black person dressing like a white "hippie" from those days.

No, I don't think so, as long as it's done in jest to make fun of the silly afro and not to despite the black community.
