You know, I honestly don't know yet ... for myself .. I am going to replace that clunky, old TV in my bedroom with a new LCD TV (I replaced the one in the living room with LCD last year .. and like the lightweight LCD Screen)...
My new boyfriend (and I am an empty-nesting single retiree) is an Artist and does farm as well ... so I am planning on art supplies for his gift (or a gift certificate to his favorite store for art supplies),
My adult children only want $ (and are at that selfish stage ... where they "forget" what their long term single mom provided for them) ... so it will be some simple gift certificate ...
My Sibling ... well, I went up in an aircraft this summer, and took a series of Aerial Photos of their ranch ... and that is a 16*20 sofa size print that I am having mounted and framed as I speak (takes some time to mount/frame properly ... and the print turned out FABULOUS!)
My other ibling ... restaurant gift certificate (he travels on business), and for their wives ... some collectibles for the season ... because one definitely goes all out with Christmas Decorations .. and the other loves to cook ... so most likely some gift certificate to a favorite cooking supply store.
Everything depends on how well you know the individual(s) and their ages .. toddlers mostly are thrilled by the wrapping (and not the present), teens like Video Games (or gift certificates to movies, video stores), other children like toys, and most adults have favorite talents, hobbies, whatever.
For myself ... I love my Digital SLR ... and would appreciate a gift certificate to a camera shop .. so I can get more filters, lens hoods, maybe a new lens, etc. But those can be expensive, and I do NOT want anyone to purchase for me what I can do for myself.

My twelve year old is getting an iPod and a makeup kit for Christmas. (Obviously a 12 year old girl). She loves putting on makeup and asked for the iPod so often and repeatedly I'd feel bad if she didn't get it. (She doesn't get expensive items just because she asks every year but I decided this would be a special exception : )

My husband, son, and I are making necklaces for everyone this year. We buy the raw birthstones at nature stores. Then, we wrap the stones in copper wire you can buy at fabric/craft stores, and put them on leather straps. If you make the straps long enough to go over your head, just tie them in the back. Necklaces are worn by both girls and boys, so everyone is happy!

http://www.gifts.com/
I use this site before I go out shopping for any type of gift.
If you click on "Personality" and then "Find Out Now" you can take a quiz about the person you are buying the gift for and you will get pages of suggestions.
They also, when you click on an item, have other similar items on the right hand side so you can comparison shop right from your house.
:)
