I drive a 2000 mitsubishi eclipse GS. When I rev up the car, i begin to hear a hissing noise from the engine at about 3,000-4,000 rpm. When I shift into the next gear (lower rpms) it goes away until i reach the higher rpms again. This only happens when the car is in gear, if it is in neutral I cannot seem to get the noise. The engine is not turbocharged

What could this be? How do I find and fix the problem?

There is a noticable decrease in the accelleration rate when the hissing noise kicks in. The car still accellerates, but not at the rate prior to the sound.

It is also on/off. Sometimes I can run the car without ever hearing the noise, and other times it will happen.

It may be that you heard the hiss caused by the high amount of air being used.
I can hear mine sucking air under full acceleration, more so with a low restriction air filter.
It could be a vacuum leak or an unconnected vacuum line. But I just think that it most likely is just normal.
But if you have noticed a major change in fuel economy or performance, look for a vacuum leak.
