How can you tell a fuel knock from other noises created by a diesel engine?

Experience. On engines with injection pump you loosen fuel line at injector to cut out cylinder and listen to hear if offending noise disappears. Better to remove injectors and have them tested at diesel pump repair shop.

Some degree of detonation for a diesel engine is normal.

Fuel knock with a diesel? That's funny.

It only does it when ever it's running.
