Run a virus scanner like this one its free:
trendmicro.com its called house call. Maybe something got on your pc while you were downloading or someone else used your computer.

Is this a dial up connection or a broad band conection?

If dial up check the dial up settings as this may cause an automatic closure.

If it is a broadband connection, what sort of equipment do you have? It could be a modem or router issue. We need more info to help.

Set your router from on-demand connection mode to always online. Also, run a virus-scanner and spyware detector etc.
