Is no one familiar with Darwinistic optimism?
It's the general principal that every characteristic of humans exists and persists to the end of helping us survive.
Or in the common tongue: "It's all good"
Life is hard. Problems abound. We complain to focus the team mind on our problems. We complain not just to vent our frustrations, but to learn if our problems are typical or unusual, whether they are easy, hard or impossible to solve.
If Paris Hilton complains she has nothing to wear, we roll our eyes. When children become adults and complain about having to support themselves, we say "Welcome to the club"
And so Paris finds out she doesn't really have a problem, and maturing kids learn responsibility. It's certainly possible to complain too much, but by and large complaining is SUPPOSED to be here.
Most wealth comes from someone solving a complaint.
I think I'll go design Paris a new dress, and pay some teenager minimum wage to make it.
;-)

You complain when you're uneasy, in pain, unsatisfied, or bored. So,.... whats the connection?
But sometimes it's just small talk.
Humans are social creatures, they can't live alone. one type of inter- human communication is complaining.
Also, I think complaining takes some of the load off your shoulders.
I don't agree with someone up there who said there has to be a gain. That is not unique to complaining. We do allot of things for specific gains.

while i agree with frustration and not seeing a way to solve a problem, i would more say its due to our need to communicate, and a need to voice our problems/concerns/gripes etc
we as humans like to share, we do this with good things also, sometimes the right amount, sometimes too much and end up sounding full of ourselves
like most things, complaining can be a positive or negative, its all in how its used, the manner and who it is directed at, at what response you get from doing it
complaining to your co-workers about your job-negative as a solution, positive perhaps if they agree with you
complaining to your supervisor in a well worded complaint-positive if it corrects the situation, negative if they dont listen or care

Complaining is not a need, but a learned behavior. If someone knows that if they complain enough they will get what they want, they will continue to do it.
It's nothing more than a method of manipulation.
Some people just like to b***h and moan, hear themselves talk....and they have nothing interesting to say, so they dump all over something, verbally.

Well i suppose if you always get your own way and no-one ever tells you you can't always have what you want, then you're bound to complain if things don't go your way. I supect this starts from home, and also living with someone who has/had these traits.

The need of complain arises out of our incapacity to solve a situation, or out of frustration.
