She will be in College too, and we live close enough for her to live home.....but she wants to move into either the dorm or into a rental house with two other girls. Is she old enough for this? I've told her that if she does that, she will have to pay for it herself because she could live at home and it isn't a necessity....

Moms hate to see their kids grow up and leave the nest but they do and we can't keep them from flying no more than a mother bird can keep her baby birds from flying. I left home at 17 and never went back. I paid for & finished college on my own too. Try not to fight her on this one as just because she wants to live on her own it doesn't mean she is rejecting you. And if you can afford to help her out with rent, then do so - but don't make it a threat. You are entering a period of time when an adolescent really wants and needs to be independent but still wants and needs parental protection and guidance. Try not to let your fears color your decision making. Parenting is a life long job.

I moved out at 18 too, similar conditions. I came home often to do my dirty laundry and sometimes (heheh) cause i missed my mama's food. I called her a couple of time wondering how to do this or that... and everything was fine. I even grew closer to my family, cause I could see them whenever I wanted without feeling like I had to see them all the time. Making her pay for herself, tho, is OK. Its her choice, she has to assume the responsabilities. And if she finds it too hard, she'll be back in no time :D

Let her try to be out on her own! It will teach her what the real world is like and to have more responsibilities! Then you can also tell her that she will always have a place to live back at home with you, just in case things don't work out!

Absolutely it is normal. She needs to feel like she can take care of herself. I would suggest the dorm, though. Rental houses have too much upkeep, like the yard.

More than likely, she will be back on your doorstep before too long. Let her go... it is time, Mom!

I'm 18 and I live in a condo I have mortgage on my own with another girl roomate that moved in to help me with the rent. I pay my own way to college because me and my parents made too much last year for me to qualify for any serious financial aide. I go to community college, pay my own bills, and am my own boss. I don't party or do anything crazy so I mean it all has to do with is she ready for responsibilties and can she handle them?

At 18 you're an adult, let her move out and be on her own and learn what it takes to run a house hold. It will be a great learning experience she'll never forget.

Shes 18! Let her do it. She needs to learn responsibility. And learn how to make a living without mom and dad by her side. Im sure if something happened though mom and dad can help. I guess she just wants to be independant
